Sweet & Sour has been the main topic of almost everyone in my timeline. I'm not quite sure if it's because Jang Ki Yong is the main lead in this movie (and by the way, he has an ongoing drama My Roommate is a Gumiho) or because of the story itself.
Since I have been so busy with work, I haven't been updated much with the Korean community, although I still try to find some time to watch some dramas and KPOP comebacks. I just got a news that Sweet & Sour has been released already on Netflix. So my workmates and I decided to watch it after our work. I haven't watched any trailers or read the synopsis of this movie when I watched it.
About Sweet & Sour
Sweet & Sour is a Korean film that was released last June 4, 2020 via Netflix. The main leads here are Jang Ki Yong (Jang Hyeok), Chae Soobin (Jung Da Eun), and Krystal (Han Bo Yeong). It is a story about a couple who drifted apart from each other as they both were busy with their jobs.
Thoughts about Sweet & Sour
The transition of the story was executed well
Note: Contains spoilers so if you don’t want to read spoilers then I suggest to stop reading this part.
It's just a very typical story about the struggles of a couple and how they deal with their long-distance relationship. But what made it special was how it made the viewers believe that Jang Ki Yong and Lee Woo Je (whose names are both Jang Hyuk in the movie) plays the same role. And of course, the plot twist was revealed at the end.
I love how they started the movie with Soobin’s and Wooje’s cute story and how it transitioned to Soobin’s and Ki Yong’s story. It was really a smooth transition.
The only thing I didn’t understand was whether Krystal’s character knows that Ki Yong has a girlfriend or not. I don’t know if I’m not paying that much attention or it wasn’t really emphasized. At first, I honestly thought that Krystal doesn’t know anything (even my co-workers think the same). But as I was reading some articles about the film, the writer mentioned that Krystal’s character is aware.
Everyone’s acting is good
I really love their acting here especially Chae Soobin’s and Jang Ki Yong’s. You can really feel their emotions, their struggles, and how they live their lives. Krystal’s acting is commendable too. She was able to portray her character in a very funny way. In fact, you won’t get irritated with her even if she is the third-party because her character here is such a cutie.
The story has a certain target audience and I’m not part of it
Although the movie is really good and I enjoyed it well, I realized that I am not part of the target audience. First is because I’m not in a relationship so I don’t have to deal with LDR problems. I can’t relate much with all those lovey-doves feelings and how they deal with cheating and stuff.
But just because I wasn’t part of the target audience doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. I liked the movie but I could have liked it more if I can relate to them. My co-workers were able to relate to it that’s why they appreciated the film even more.
The lesson of the film was presented well
“If you miss a cab, you can wait for the next one. But if you lose a person... they’re lost for good.” It hits differently. This is not only for the romantic relationship but for every relationship out there. May it with friends, workmates, fandom, etc. Continue to cherish important people in your lives.
Another lesson here is that, you should not use any person for your on convenience. I was quite irritated with the main leads when they tried to use other people. Both of them used other people. But I’m confused on whether they really broke up or they just fought and was trying to find a little space. If it’s the latter, then I believed both of them cheated.
If you ask me if I’m going to suggest this film to other people, then my answer is yes. It’s a good movie with a lighter mood than most cheating films out there. Sweet & Sour is now available via Netflix. Make sure to check it out and tell me your thoughts about the film.
