Watching Korean Movies with Stage Greetings: A Unique Experience in Seoul

January 07, 2025

Watching a Korean movie with Stage Greetings feels different

I’ve watched a lot of movies in South Korea already, especially during the 2024 Busan International Film Festival (which I still haven’t finished writing about—oops!). But nothing compares to the feeling of seeing the actors in person during a movie screening. Last Christmas (2024), while in Seoul before heading back to the Philippines, I stumbled upon a few films showing at just the right times—and, even better, some had Stage Greetings! I couldn’t pass up the opportunity and immediately bought tickets.

What is a Stage Greeting during Korean movies?

A Stage Greeting is a special event where actors, directors, producers, and other film crew members visit the cinema to meet the audience after the film. These events typically last 10-20 minutes and usually happen at the end of the movie, though sometimes they occur before the film starts, in which case the interaction time is shorter.

The best part about Stage Greetings? You don’t have to pay extra to see the actors! Your movie ticket covers it all—no additional costs for the special experience.

How to know the schedules of the films with Stage Greetings?

If you’re looking to attend a Stage Greeting, the good news is that schedules are usually posted online. I personally rely on social media, where fans and official production companies often share updates. The most reliable sources are social media accounts of production companies like CJ ENM Movies. If there’s a film you want to see, make sure to check the production company's social media accounts for updates on Stage Greeting schedules.

Stage Greetings generally happen during the first and second weeks of a movie's release, but they may be extended if there’s strong fan interest or demand. So, keep an eye out during the movie’s early run for the best chance to experience one.

How to buy movie tickets?

Buying movie tickets can be a bit tricky, especially for tourists or foreigners. Many Korean cinemas require a Korean ID, phone number, and bank account to purchase tickets online. However, there are a few ways you can still secure tickets:

At the cinema kiosk: You can purchase tickets at the self-service kiosk at the cinema.
Ask a local friend: If you know someone who lives in South Korea, you can ask them to buy tickets for you. They can send you the e-ticket or you can print it out at the kiosk using the reservation number.

Movies I watched with Stage Greetings

Excluding the films I saw during the Busan International Film Festival, I had the chance to experience two films with Stage Greetings on December 25th and 26th, 2024. Here’s a look at my experiences:

Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights

This was a completely impulsive decision. While my friend and I were taking photos at COEX, I saw that Ong Seong Wu and Kim Ji Eun were holding a Stage Greeting for the animated film Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights at IPark Mall. I quickly checked the schedule and saw there were still plenty of tickets available. Without hesitation, my friend and I grabbed this golden opportunity!

Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights is an animated film about a reindeer competing to become Santa’s next reindeer. Ong Seong Wu and Kim Ji Eun voiced the characters in the Korean version, so they attended the Stage Greeting to meet fans.

I even had a short encounter with Ong Seong Wu.

Harbin

Harbin is a 2024 South Korean historical drama set during the early 1900s, following Korean independence activists. It stars Hyun Bin and is a must-watch for fans of historical dramas. When I found out there would be a Stage Greeting, I immediately purchased a ticket, and I’m so glad my schedule aligned with the event.

During the greeting, Hyun Bin, Jeon Yeobin, Jo Woojin, Park Hoon, and Director Woo Minho were all present. The atmosphere was electric! Although the lighting was a bit dark for photos, I could still clearly see how handsome Hyun Bin looked in person.

I also have to mention that the movie itself was fantastic. Despite the lack of English subtitles, I was able to follow the story and truly appreciated the film's portrayal of Korea’s struggle for independence.

Attending a movie screening with Stage Greetings is a unique and unforgettable experience, especially when you get to meet your favorite stars in person. I’m so grateful for these opportunities and hope to experience even more Stage Greetings in the future.
